Womb Massage - A Self Care Practice

Updated: Oct 14

I was first introduced to womb massage during my thai massage training in India in 2016. I went on to train more deeply in the abdominal and womb massage practice during my sports and injury massage course.

Through my fascination and study with Ayurveda I have come to discover oils and other techniques that complement this practice.

I practiced this once or twice a month usually in my follicular phase and I have found it extremely supportive for my menstrual cycle rhythm, my emotions and my libido.

This is a brief overview to tickle your taste buds ready for the live that we have on 27 October.

The Womb: A Multifaceted Space of Life and Healing

The womb is rich with complexity and layered meaning, embodying physical, emotional, spiritual, and energetic dimensions that deepen our understanding of women’s health. Let’s explore these various layers of the womb and how they contribute to our lives as women.

Before we start, I’d love to invite you to our next online WOMB MASSAGE event:

  • Tips for creating a sacred space for your practice

Our Precious Womb, also Known as the Uterus

Physiological Layer: The Rhythm of Life

  • Menstrual Cycle: Each phase of the cycle—menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase—has its own physiological and energetic qualities.

  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the womb transforms into a nurturing sanctuary for new life.

  • Childbirth: Cervical effacement involves the contraction of uterine muscles, drawing the uterus upward and opening the cervix.

  • Release and Healing: The womb is a source of medicinal blood; menstrual blood holds healing properties and the potential for regeneration.

Spiritual Layer: The Essence of Creation

  • Creation of Life: Our innate ability to create—through childbirth, artistic expression, or personal transformation.

  • Wisdom and Intuition: Many cultures recognize the womb as a source of wisdom, where women tap into their inner knowing and collective consciousness.

  • Release: Each month, women consciously and unconsciously release what no longer serves them or their communities.

Emotional Layer: Relationships and Desire

  • Connection to Relationships: It influences how we relate to ourselves and others, serving as a center of attachment, nurturing, and vulnerability. Many women find that emotional health is closely linked to womb health, as unresolved emotions can manifest in physical discomfort or reproductive challenges.

  • Innate Desire: The womb embodies our innate desires for connection, creativity, and nurturing.

Benefits of Womb Massage

  • Enhanced Fertility: Promotes proper alignment of the uterus and increases blood flow to the pelvic area.

  • Relief from Menstrual Discomfort: Alleviates symptoms by relaxing surrounding muscles and improving circulation.

  • Emotional Healing: Encourages a deeper connection to your body and emotions, allowing for the release of stored trauma and tension in the pelvic area.

  • Improved Digestive Function: Gentle massage techniques stimulate digestive organs.

The Role of Oils in Womb Massage

Here are some Ayurvedic oils commonly used:

  • Castor Oil: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties; relieves pain and promotes healing while improving circulation and stimulating the lymphatic system.

  • Sesame Oil: Warming and nourishing, it promotes grounding and stability.

  • Coconut Oil: Soothing and hydrating; ideal for gentle massages and balancing heat in the body, particularly during menstruation.

  • Ghee: For sensitive or overheated skin.

Practices: Womb Massage Techniques

  1. Setting the Intent: Ground yourself and focus on your intention for the massage—be it improving reproductive health or addressing feelings of stagnation.

  2. Feeling and Preparing: Assess your body for areas of tension or blockages.

  3. Massage Technique:

    • Soft Touch on Tension Areas: Begin with gentle massage on any areas of tension.

    • Renline Focus: Apply pressure along the Renline (the conception vessel).

    • Follow the Rib Cage: Massage under the rib ridge to support emotional health.

    • Intestines Use circular motions on the abdomen, a clockwise direction.

    • Palpate the Intestines: Gently palpate to stimulate digestive function.

    • Clockwise Massage: Perform gentle clockwise motions over the abdomen to promote circulation.

  4. Relax: Lay back breathe gently and feel deeply into your body.

  5. Hydration: Drink plenty of water afterward to flush out any released toxins.

Precautions to Keep in Mind

  • Do Not Perform During Menstruation: Allow your body to rest and cleanse naturally during this time.

  • Avoid if Pregnant: Womb massage should be avoided during pregnancy, as it can stimulate the uterus.

  • Any Signs of Pain or Discomfort: Listen to your body and discontinue if necessary.

  • After Recent Surgery: Avoid massage in the abdominal area if you have recently undergone surgery or medical procedures.

  • In Cases of Infection or Inflammation: If you have any known infections, inflammation, or medical conditions affecting the reproductive organs, consult a healthcare professional before practicing.
