The New Year often brings excitement and expectations for fresh starts, but let’s pause for a moment and consider: this celebration is based on the Gregorian calendar—a human-made system for measuring time.
The Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, was designed to bring the calendar year in sync with the Earth's orbit around the Sun. It divides the year into 12 months and accounts for the Earth’s 365.25-day orbit by adding an extra day every four years—a leap year.
While practical, this calendar is fixed and linear, unlike the dynamic, cyclical rhythms of the Earth. As the Earth continues its orbit, the natural cycles—seasons, animal migrations, plant growth—don’t adhere to our man-made markers of time.
Northern Hemisphere
If you're in the northern hemisphere, winter is here —a time when nature draws inward, resting and conserving energy. The animals reflect this beautifully: bears retreat to hibernate, conserving their strength for spring; trees shed their leaves, directing energy to their roots to grow stronger in stillness. Winter whispers the wisdom of slowing down, of finding warmth and nourishment within.
How can your roots grow stronger if your energy is still being sent outward to leaves and flowers?
Winter invites us to turn external energy inward, toward the heart, much like the animals and plants around us. It’s a time for:
Sensual experiencing: Grounding in the present through your senses.
Deepening intuition: Getting acquainted with your inner voice, as animals listen to their instincts to survive the cold.
Releasing unconscious patterns: Noticing what no longer serves you and choosing a new path.
Self-discovery: Meeting parts of yourself you haven’t had time to explore.
Softening the heart: Detaching from ego-driven desires to connect with your soul's true purpose.
In time, you’ll move into spring ready to extend your energy outward, drawing wisdom into your branches—the external world.
Southern Hemisphere
If you're in the southern hemisphere, it's the peak of summer —nature’s full expression. Birds, bees, and insects are active, fulfilling their roles in pollination and life cycles. The sun is at its most radiant, energizing plants, animals, and people to bring their energy outward to connect. This energy calls for presence, play, and expression.
Sensual experiencing: Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, taste vibrant seasonal fruits, and revel in the colors and sounds of summer.
Expanding intuition: Just as animals seek sustenance and shelter, allow your intuition to guide you toward experiences that nourish your soul.
Playfulness and connection: Dance, laugh, sing - connect with whatever brings joyful expression.
Cultivating gratitude: Reflect on the abundance around you. Spend time acknowledging the gifts of the season, from the physical bounty to the connections that bring you joy.
Neither season asks us to force rigid resolutions or chase ego-driven goals.
For those in the southern hemisphere, this peak summer energy will soon prepare you for autumn, where you’ll courageously let go of what no longer serves you, turning inward once again.
Wherever you are in the world,
Let your heart guide you. Trust that what is meant for you will align. This is not passive work—meeting your patterns and triggers with awareness is courageous and requires energy. But love is overflowing and endless; it will hold you.
If you have a dream or vision, beautiful! Align your heart, thoughts, and actions with it. Focus on the experience it offers—what does it feel like to live in that alignment?
Journal, dream, reflect. Hold space for the messages from within—synchronicities, dreams, and insights. Let the wisdom of nature, the animals, and your heart guide you. Align with the rhythm of life, allowing each season to deepen your connection to yourself and the world around you.
Refocusing Your Energy for the Year Ahead
This New Year, consider releasing the pressure to achieve or perform.
Energy can often become scattered as we juggle daily demands. It's powerful to pause, reconnect with our deeper selves, and realign our intentions. By doing so, we create space for clarity, growth, and alignment with our inner rhythms and the cycles of nature.
