New Moon Energy

The Last Dark Moon of 2024: A Black Moon

The final Dark Moon of the year brings with it a rare celestial event—a Black Moon. Although not an official astronomical term, a Black Moon is typically defined as either the second New Moon in a single calendar month or the third New Moon in a season with four New Moons. This year, it falls on December 30, 2024, at 22:26 UK time (or December 31 in some time zones), marking a potent moment of darkness and transformation.

This invisible moon offers a powerful invitation to pause, reflect, and release.

It’s an opportunity to let the seeds of the heart fall into the fertile soil of your inner world, free from the weight of traditional New Year’s resolutions. Rather than adhering to societal expectations, the Black Moon encourages us to recalibrate intentions in harmony with nature's cycles, embracing the shadowed spaces within ourselves.

The Power of the Dark Moon

The Dark Moon, or the moon’s void stage, represents a time of stillness—a moment to turn inward before the new lunar cycle begins. This is not a phase for action or force, but rather for rest and reflection. It’s a chance to nourish the inner soil, tending to what we truly need and gently releasing anything that no longer serves us.

As the moon’s light begins to return, it symbolizes the transition from the stillness of winter to the quiet stirrings of spring. Following this phase, the New Moon invites us to plant seeds of intention and nurture the potential for growth in the cycles ahead.

Moon Meditation

Sidereal Astrology

Sidereal vs. Tropical Astrology

Sidereal astrology uses the real positions of the stars in the sky to create your chart. It differs from tropical astrology. Because the Earth’s position slowly shifts over time, sidereal astrology reflects where the stars actually are today, while tropical astrology keeps the zodiac signs fixed to the seasons. As a result, your zodiac sign might be different in sidereal astrology compared to tropical astrology.

Sun in Sagittarius: The Centaur’s Dance of Focus and Freedom

When I envision the Centaur—a being with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse—I feel the pull of wild freedom and grounded power. The horse, a symbol of loyalty and strength, embodies untamed, primal energy, while the archer’s focused gaze and poised bow represent purpose, precision, and direction.

This juxtaposition is dynamic, a dance between instinct and intellect, between the animal's raw force and the human's calculated aim. The Centaur, always in motion, evokes a sense of vibrancy and boundless possibility, an explorer forever expanding.

The imagery carries a potent message: the journey toward understanding and growth requires both focus and surrender. The archer locks their gaze on the target, but the release of the bowstring requires trust, spontaneity, and flow.

This speaks to the importance of staying connected to your inner vision, letting it guide you while remaining open to the unseen and the unpredictable. True freedom lies in the balance of wildness and focus, instinct and intention, movement and stillness.

A Reflection on Balance and Growth

  • Foundation: What feels out of balance in your life right now?

  • Vision: In this area of imbalance, what is the shift you desire to experience?

    • Close your eyes and imagine this transformation—what does it look like, and how does it feel in your body?

    • Pay attention to the sensations that arise as you embody this vision.

  • Welcoming: What is one thing you could invite into your life to support you and bring you closer to balance?

    • This could be a practice, mindset, or relationship that aligns with your deeper needs.

  • Releasing: What is one thing you could let go of that no longer serves you or is contributing to imbalance?

    • Consider habits, limiting beliefs, or situations that feel heavy or misaligned with your true path.

Moon in Sagittarius: Fire Sign

Moon in Sagittarius: Guardian of the Inner Flame

With the Moon in Sagittarius, we are invited to explore the corners of our inner world where we may feel unsafe or insecure.

These areas often reveal themselves in our reactions, triggers, or the words we speak when we feel unsettled or threatened. This lunar phase calls for us to step back and gain a wider perspective—helping us reframe discomfort and see it as part of the bigger picture.

Sagittarius brings expansive energy, grounded in the belief that growth arises when we step beyond the boundaries of what feels familiar and secure.

By viewing our fears through a broader lens, we can shift from feeling trapped by them to seeing them as opportunities for growth and deeper understanding. The energy of Sagittarius is strong and supportive, encouraging us to trust the process of evolution and move forward with renewed strength and inner clarity.

Journal Prompts:

  • Where do I feel most unsafe or insecure within myself?

  • What triggers these feelings, and how do I react when I feel threatened or uncomfortable?

  • How can I shift my perspective to view these challenges as opportunities for growth?

  • What thoughts or actions can I reframe to bring more peace and grounding into these areas of my life?

As a fire element, Sagittarius embodies transformation and alchemy. It invites us to release the old and meet our authentic expression more deeply. This lunar phase asks us to examine where we may be holding on too tightly, burning ourselves in the process, or reacting explosively. It also calls attention to areas where we may not be honoring our inner flame, leaving us with a sense of darkness or depleted energy.

This is a time to stoke the fire of our passion with intention—clearing any obstacles that block its natural brilliance. By doing so, we can invite a brighter, more vibrant expression of our true selves into the world.

New Moon Ritual

Sagittarius New Moon Ritual: Transformation and Inner Flame

Preparation:

  • Find a quiet, comfortable space where you can connect deeply with yourself.

  • Gather a candle (preferably orange or red, symbolizing fire and transformation), a small bowl of water, a journal, and something to write with.

  • Optional: Gather herbs like sage, rosemary, or frankincense to cleanse the space or enhance the ritual.

Step 1: Grounding and Centering

  • Begin by sitting comfortably and taking a few deep breaths, allowing yourself to settle into the present moment.

  • Close your eyes and visualize roots growing from the soles of your feet, grounding you deeply into the earth. Feel the support and stability of the earth beneath you.

Step 2: Calling in the Fire Element

  • Light your candle, symbolizing the fire of Sagittarius. As you do, invite the transformative energy of fire to enter your space. Visualize this fire as a cleansing force, burning away the old and making room for the new.

  • Hold your hands over the candle’s flame and feel its warmth. Imagine this warmth spreading throughout your body, igniting your inner flame and stirring up energy within you.

Step 3: Releasing What No Longer Serves

  • Take the bowl of water in front of you. This water represents the emotions or energies that need to be released.

  • Reflect on where you have been holding on too tightly—whether it’s fear, doubt, old habits, or situations that no longer serve you. Let these be symbolized by the water.

  • Write down on small pieces of paper anything you need to release. Acknowledge the weight these things have had on your energy.

  • When you're ready, safely burn these papers in the candle flame (if it feels safe to do so), watching the ashes fall into the water.

Step 4: Reframing and Inviting Transformation

  • With the space cleared, grab your journal and ask yourself: What is the transformation I am calling in?

  • Write freely about how you wish to evolve—both internally and externally. Visualize the version of yourself that is free, expansive, and fully alive. Let this vision feel real, imagining how it feels in your body.

  • Focus on sensations of freedom, curiosity, and inner strength. As you write, speak affirmations:

    • I release the past and welcome my new form.

    • I trust the process of transformation.

Step 5: Ignite Your Inner Flame

  • Once your vision is clear, hold your hands over the candle once more. Silently invite your inner flame to shine brighter.

  • Feel the warmth fill your chest and spread throughout your body.

  • Sit in silence for a few moments, tuning into the light within you. Imagine this light expanding outward, filling you with energy, clarity, and passion.

Step 6: Closing and Gratitude

  • Close the ritual by extinguishing the candle, and acknowledging the completion of your transformation.

  • Take a moment to thank the fire element for its guidance and the new moon energy for supporting your intentions.

  • Express gratitude for the release and the space it has created for your new path.

  • Carry the intention of transformation with you, knowing that the fire of Sagittarius will continue to guide and ignite your journey forward.
